Weepikes is a pronk/indie rock band from Helsinki, Finland. The first incarnation of the band was active only for a short period of 3 years from 1994 to 1997, when they released ep's on Finnish indie labels like Trash Can Records and Bad Vugum. After 13 years of hiatus Weepikes is back and working on new songs. With a little help from Kramer (of Shimmy-Disc fame) on mixing and mastering, the first results of the return are finally out.

The most underrated release in Finland or at least in the world. Despite a difficult recording process they managed to bring the sounds, songs, lyrics, the mood and everything to the next level. Perfect finnish folk rock album that will become a true classic when it's found again in 20 years. Sadly this is apparently their last album as well. As luck would have it you couldn't imagine a better ending to a career.

Suomen tai ainakin maailman aliarvostetuin julkaisu. Bändi on saanut vaikean äänityprosessista huolimatta soundit, biisit, lyriikat, tunnelman ja kaiken ns. nextille levelille. Täydellinen suomenkielinen folk rock -albumi, josta tulee parinkymmenen vuoden päästä uudelleen löydetty klassikko. Harmillista kyllä, tämä lienee mahdollisesti myös "Respan" viimeinen albumi - jonkinlainen onni onnettomuudessa on se, että parempaa päätöstä uralle on vaikea kuvitella.

Evergreen classic that is by far my most listened album of all the Fonal releases. The variety of the songs with it's global influences is wide even though the album is very unified in it's acoustic warmth. I have fond memories of all the tracks from the album: the fragility of the moons in Taiwan, the romantic hot gypsy flamenco in Suudelmitar and my passed namesake's, Juho Koiranen's bouzouki playing in the up beat Luunvalkoiset Purjeet that is the best anthem ever written in Finland.

Ikivihreä klassikkoalbumi, jota olen kuunnellut ylivoimaisesti eniten Fonalin julkaisuista. Kappaleiden tunnelmakirjo globaaleine vaikutteineen on laaja, vaikka albumi onkin hyvin yhtenäinen akustisessa lämminhenkisyydessään. Jokaisesta Suudelmittaren kappaleesta on syöpynyt mieleen hienoja muistoja: mm. In my view this album began a new phase in the career of the 15 year old Kemialliset Ystävät. With it Jan Anderzéns music took a leap towards more electronic music which was apparently influenced by new equipment purchases, like a sampler. Being aware of Anderzéns vast knowledge of music and vast amount of influences this type of growth is gladly welcomed. This album will sound fresh for a long time to come, it manages to melt multiple contradictions: collective/individualistic, random/well thought of, electronique/acoustic, dynamic/flat etc.

Kemiallisten ystävien 'superhimmelialbumi' aloitti minun silmissäni - tai pikemminkin korvissani - uuden vaiheen vähintään viisitoista vuotiaan 'yhtyeen' uralla. Kyseisen albumin myötä Jan Anderzénin musiikki otti harppauksia elektronisen musiikin suuntaan, mihin myötävaikuttivat ilmeisesti uudet laitehankinnat, kuten sampleri. Jos tuntee Anderzénin erittäin laajan musiikin tuntemuksen ja lukuisat vaikutteet, tällaisen toimintakentän laajennuksen ottaa ilolla vastaan. Kyseinen albumi kuulostaa tuoreelta vielä pitkään, sillä se onnistuu yhdistämään samaan aikaan monia eri vastakohtia: kollektiivinen/individualistinen, sekava/jäsentynyt, elektroninen/akustinen, dynaaminen/tasapaksu jne.

Risto Ylihärsilä from Risto.

KEMIALLISET YSTÄVÄT: s/t (FR-50 CD, LP, Cassette)

Already the first song is a direction that every mucisian should take and stay on it for the next ten years and then consider is there any reason to return from that path.

Heti ensimmäinen biisi on mielestäni suunta joka jokaisen muusikon tulisi ottaa ja pysyä siellä seuraavat kymmenen vuotta ja harkita sen jälkeen onko sieltä mitään syytä ainakaan palata takaisin.

VILLE LEINONEN: Auringonsäde/Pommisuoja (FR-82 CD)

In my opinion the best and most holistic record from Leinonen. The joy and happiness disappears halfway through the album. He doesn't try to lift the mood above realistic possibilities even in the final song. In addition the lenght is good for an urban city person to be able to listen to it all the way through in one go.

Mielestäni kokonaisuutena Leinosen paras ja ehjin levy. Toivo ja ilo katoaa levyn puolivälin tienoilla. Tunnelmaa ei yritetä nostaa realististen mahdollisuuksien yläpuolelle edes viimeisessä biisissä. Lisäksi sopivan pitunen, että urbaani cityihminen kykenee kuuntelemaan alusta loppuun kuuntelemalla.

ELEANOORA ROSENHOLM: Vainajan muotokuva (FR-54 CD/LP)

For the first and at the moment the only time I've ever experienced a change of reality was during the song Ovet ja Huoneet. Taking into account my extremely analytical listening style - this uses that element to create this mood and that is supposed to make me feel like this and this - I think this accomplishment deserves a mention.

Ovet ja huoneet -kappaleen aikana koin ensimmäistä ja toistaiseksi viimeistä kertaa elämässäni, että jonkin musiikkikappaleen aikana ympäröivä todellisuus muuttuu joksikin toiseksi. Kun ottaa huomioon jatkuvan, erittäin analyyttisen tässä kohdassa käytetään näitä ja näitä elementtejä antamaan tämän ja tämän kaltaisia ärsykkeitä joiden on tarkoitus herättää tämän ja tämän kaltaisia tuntemuksia kuulijassa -tavan jolla kuuntelen musiikkia, niin ihan mainitsemisen arvoinen suoritus.

Does anybody know if collective L'Orch d'al-Fajr (responsible for arrangements of some tracks) really exists? Or it's just kind of a trick? All info found when googling leads to press release/article about the album.
Also, who are STTH and NMKL? I know that Ville mixed the album himself, so maybe he is STTH?

Ah, yes - what about Le Zen Tomb, was the album really recorded there in Paris?

I bet Sami knows all the answers, but would he like to tell? Or it's better to keep the secret?

Dear Fonal Family,

Here is how the story goes: new Jarse multimedia 7" came out over one week ago. However, it seems that many of you who bought the 7" don't have a clue how to enjoy the multimedia features of the release.

Which comes as no surprise for us as we ourselves don't have a clue! Jarse just gave us the masters, told us that it should be marketed as multimedia single, and left north to Lapland to finnish his full length album, without a phone or computer, only a backpack full of reversed Led Zeppelin bootlegs. So, we can't really count on him now, it might take years for him to get back! It might be that he just tricked us all and this multimedia content doesn't exist after all!

So in order to come up with a fast solution we will now set up a challenge for you. S/he who makes the most awesome tutorial on how to enjoy the multimedia features in optional format (text, painting, video etc.) or offers a bulletproof proof (again in optional format) that this content does not exist will be rewarded by us with free Fonal releases!

Send your answers to odotanturhaan(at)fonal.com. You have until August 15th to send in your proof.

used to be a big fan of vinyl but when ipod came out, it just changed everything to me.

I discovered your label recently and around the same time experienced my brain being eaten via my ears - a very happy sensation!

Fonal Records julkaisee uuden Tv-resistori levyn joka on ainakin vielä
nimeämätön ja kulkee bändin keskuudessa työnimellä Pallolevy. Levy
julkaistaan CD, vinyyli ja digitaalimuodossa Maalis-Huhtikuun
vaihteessa. Edellisen levynsä Tv-resistori julkaisi lähes viisi vuotta
sitten, Serkut rakastaa paremmin (Fonal, 2006) oli menestys sekä
kriitikoiden että yleisön keskuudessa. Ensimmäisen levyn (Intiaanidisko,
Fonal, 2004) synapurkkapop on vaihtunut juurevampaan kitara
painotteiseen meininkiin. Levyllä on vivahteita suomi-iskelmästä ja jopa
kantrista. Tämä ei ole sinällään ihme sillä Tv-resistori on soittannut
keikoilla mm. Canned Heat yhtyeen Goin Up The Country biisiä josta se on
jo levyttänyt oman cover versionsakin. Biisin hallinnoiman tahon
kieltäessä cover version julkaisun joudumme odottamaan oikeuksien
vanhenemista. Julkaisupäiväksi käännöspiisille on siis päätetty Syyskuun
3. päivä vuonna 2040. Uuden levyn kappaleita voi kuulla tänä vuonna
etukäteen Jyrockissa sekä kiertuetta valmistellaan paraikaa. Yhden
biisin tulevalta albumilta Fonal Records laittoi jakoon jo viime vuoden
Tammikuussa joka löytyy yhtyeen kotisivuilta.

Fonal Records julkaisee Eleanoora Rosenholm Hyväile minua pimeä tähti
levyn CD, vinyyli ja digitaali muodossa Maalis-Huhtikuussa 2011. Uskokaa
tai älkää mutta yhtyeen kolmas levy on edeltäviäänkin synkempi. Vainajan
muotokuva (Fonal, 2007) ja Älä kysy kuolleilta, he sanoivat (Fonal,
2008). Uusi levy on syntetisaattoripainotteinen matka pimeän tähden
sydämeen ja kaupunkiin. Se on tehty kokonaisuutta silmällä pitäen ja on
instrumentaatioltaan orkestraalisempi - sillä kuullaan mm. vierailevia
puhallinsoittajia. Mika Rättö on normaalin sanoitus ja sävellystoimensa
lisäksi soittanut levyn lähes kaikki rumpuraidat ja myös laulaa yhden
kappaleen. Pasi Salmi jatkaa säveltäjänä, tuottajana sekä äänittäjänä ja
Noora Tommila kuorruttaa supernovan uniikilla laulullaan. Hyväile minua
pimeä tähti ei kuitenkaan ole massiivisen tähden luhistuminen vaan
kaksoistähtijärjestelmään kuuluva valkoinen kääpiö joka kasvattaa
massaansa yli Chandrasekharin rajan. Eleanoora Rosenholmin näkee myös
livenä erittäin kattavalla suomen kiertueella Huhtikuussa. Palkitut
musiikkivideot Maailmanloppu ja Ambulanssikuskitar (Kultapumpeli, OMVF
2009) saavat myös jatkoa levyn julkaisun tienoilla.

Vinyl by far. The huge artwork, the inserts, the fragility, the craftsmanship, it all adds up to something almost magical. They may not be as practical as CD's or downloads, but they just seem so puny in comparison and are easy to lose.
CD's feel a bit odd to me, the jewelcase is usually too small to do the artwork any right, and playing it isn't nearly as handy as clicking a song in some media player. But still, they're my second choice when buying music.
And to be honest, I can't see myself paying for a digital download anytime soon. I think packaging, booklets and cover art is of uttermost importance when releasing an album, that a pure digital download never feels quite complete.
Don't know how to feel about cassettes, last time I listened to one must've been somewhere in the mid-90's, prepuberty, disregarding for my own tape deck which I sometimes use for art performances.

Berliiniläistynyt Islaja, syntymänimeltään Merja Kokkonen, on tehnyt viisi levyllistä spontaanilta kalskahtavaa ja kosmopoliittisen monimuotoisesti kihahtelevaa musiikkia, jota kuvaa jatkuva hämmästyneisyys. Kuten kummastelemamme taiteilijat Francis Baconista Doris Lessingiin ja Meredith Monkista Fritz Langiin, Islaja kääntyy sisäänpäin etsimään vastauksia kieltäytymättä sokeutumasta käsittämättömän maailman edessä.

Jos Kokkonen onkin näkijänä suhtautunut jo pitkään piittaamattomasti sovinnaisuuksiin, Keraaminen pää on minuuttejaan pidempi näyte staattisesti paikallaan polkevaa, syvälle kurkottavaa ja lapsellisesti haparoivaa äänten vuoropuhelua, joka todistaa tekijänsä janoavan tahraamattomia tekstuureja. Niistä aukeaa uudenlaisia portteja tuntemuksiin, joita ääni herättää, eikä tässä valossa olekaan merkityksetöntä, että Keraamista päätä kannattelevat monesti ameebamaisesti käyttäytyvät sähköiset rakenteet, eivät akustisiin soittimiin palautuvat
luonnonmukaiset äänenvärit. Ujeltavat, surisevat ja pulputtavat pistot seurustelevat äänekkäästi keskenään Kokkosen muotoon veistetyn äänen pitäessä hovia nyrjähtäneen maailman keskellä. Jopa siellä hän onnistuu kuulostamaan etäiseltä ja olemaan sittenkin etualalla.

Saatesanoissa kirjailija Antti Nylén toteaa, että ”hiljaisuutta on jäänyt kuuluviin”, ja sähköisen kuosin ohella levy yllättääkin nimenomaan tapahtumiensa hienovaraisuudella, haluttomuudella pureskella musiikkia kokemuksiksi kuulijan puolesta. Yövalolla vaski voi kaikua kuin Blade Runner Bluesilla, mutta maailma on toinen, kuulijan maailma kolmas. Riisutuimmillaan Keraaminen pää on kaavamaisen kulmikas kokoelma lyhyitä katkelmia ja uuvuttavasti takeltelevia luuppeja, mutta tummanpuhuvan raaka esitys ja ylä-ääniksi purkautuva ekspressionismi onnistuvat pääsääntöisesti kohottamaan kokemuksen sanojen tuolle puolen.
