Hey!

Yeah I meant 4-track tape recorders. I think everything up to 2002 or 2003 on Fonal was recorded on 4-track tape recorders

Hmmmm... I dont know if any full albums have been recorded on 8-track reel to reel's. I bough an 8-track ADAT machine that we recorded a lot of albums with. I really thought that had a good sound in it as well although it didnt have that randomness and lo-finess of tape of course.

And yeah! Paavoharju are the masters of making stuff sounds amazing with absolutely no-fi equipment!

sami
Do you mean 4-track cassette or open-reel? The Paavoharju lps are incredible, their mixes have more depth and space than many recordings that come out of professional studios. I read that the organ to a track from Laulu Laakson Kukista was recorded with a digital camera! but they made it sound huge So what Fonal albums have been recorded on the 8-track?
By an almost random coin toss we have chosen hipecac and jiji as the winners! We ended up having to seriously toss coin because most of the covers were so good!

But if you didn't win this time, don't worry! Another competition will be up fairly soon!!!! Ill email the winner so they can claim their prize!

Thank you so much for all the contestants and we truly appreaciate all you efforts!

Love, Sami / Fonal
We certainly use any kind of recording medium from analogue dictaphones, four tracks to high end computers and iphones to capture stuff. I'm open to anything that sounds interesting and intriguing. I guess my Tascam 8-track hasn't been much in use because of convinience mainly. Most of the Fonal bands recorded on tape 4-tracks until some years ago still, I do miss the workflow and ease of 4-track, there was something very special and intimate in it.

Everyone started using laptops and usb audio interfaces some years ago. I think it does change the way music sounds but you don't want to hang on to old stuff just for the sake of it. All the Paavoharju stuff has been recorded on real cheapo computers and I think those albums have the best (and most lo-fi) sounds I've ever heard!

We just had a Kemialliset Ystävät new album listening event here in Tampere and we got a 35.000 euro stereo system that we played the test pressing vinyl from The whole album was recorded on about a 750 euro system itself The guy who provided the gear didn't like the music or the sound of the album but me and Jan of KY really just thought it sounded just like the album is supposed to sound but a lot better!

Sami
Excellent! thanks very much for that Sami
I noticed that there is also an 8-track tape machine?! Lo-fi recording is something I'm very interested in, in fact I try to persuade most the musicians in my area to go more lo-fi but everyone just wants a 'professional recording'. I recently made a trip to Iceland to visit some people from Greenhouse studios, and it's quite funny how lo-fi recording is almost impossible in Iceland because you just can't get hold of tape. I wanted to buy a cassette dictaphone and there was only one in the whole of Reykjavik selling for £220!

Things like 8-track and cassette seem to get slated on forums like gearslutz, what are your thoughts on the medium?

many thanks
Dom
For sure! I'll have to do this from memory though! There's a Mackie 16 channel analogue mixer and Genelec 1030A monitors. A PC thats running Sony Vegas Pro 8 and has an RME soundcard with 16 analogue inputs. I wholeheartedly recommend all RME products, most reliable hardware I've ever used! http://www.rme-audio.de/en_index.php. A lem 16 channel snake. As for as mics go it's not very adventurous: AKG D112, Shure SM57's, Sennheiser evolution 604's, 602, AKG C 3000 B's and AKG C 414's. And some random mic's that don't have names

I have a DBX analogue stereo compressor thats real good but thats about it for hardware. Loads of guitar pedals that the artists bring along are usually patched as effects.

On the instruments side there's a real nice Hagstrom bass, looks fabulous! An old canadian tube guitar amp that has no other marking other then Mark 3 on it. Yrjö T Pilvinen pedal organ that comes from Tampere, the same city as I live in now A fender strat guitar. A Two stage Hammond (obviously a copy but sounds real nice) and a Yamaha organ thats sounds amazing but hasn't actually been used on many records at all for some reason.

Sami
This is "Aurinko Aurinko Plaa Plaa Plaa" by Risto. Obviously. I made it out of ecological carrots and a blue towel.

Kikkeliskokkelis! Tv-resistori yhtyeineen päätti jokin aika sitten julkaista seiskan kun kesä ja kaikki! Nauhoitamme kyseisen seiskan ensi sunnuntaina 2.5 Studio Redhousessa. Kutsumme teidät kaikki ottamaan osaa nauhoituksiin istumalla sohvillanne tai pöydän alla ja kyttäämällä internet-kamerapohjaista elävää kuvaa jota pyrimme tunkemaan facebook-sivuillemme koko session ajan.

Eli sunnuntaina 2.5 lähetämme klo.14-20 välisenä aikana streamia jostain kököstä laitteesta joka studion nurkassa möllöttää. Emme tiedä parempaa tapaa kuluttaa sunnuntaita. Me emme tiedä.

Lisäksi kuluvalla viikolla liikkuva poliisi on aktiivinen. Edellinen lause ei ole sananmuunnos.

Linkki: Tv-resistori @ Facebook
KEMIALLISET YSTÄVÄT ALBUM LISTENING EVENT

ky.jpg

HELSINKI, FINLAND
29.4. 2010 time:19:00 - 21:00
Ptarmigan / ILMI Ö, Nilsiänkatu 10

TAMPERE, FINLAND
7.5. 2010 time:19:00 - 21:00
Tampereen Ylioppilasteatteri, Itsenäisyydenkatu 12-14
Audio equipment provided by HighendStudio, Tampere

KEMIALLISET YSTÄVÄT
Kemialliset Ystävät is an experimental music group began by Jan Anderzen
in 1995. Kemialliset Ystävät practises in composition and it's members
are in a constant state of change. The group has been actively
performing in Finland and abroad at festivals, art centers, galleries,
cellars, planetariums. The latest concert took place at the Helsinki
swimming stadium where the public could swim while enjoying the music
through underwater speakers. Kemialliset Ystävät and it's side projects
have released dozens of recordings. The group is internationally one of
the best known Finnish acts in it's field.

LISTENING EVENT
Fonal Records will release the next album by Kemialliset Ystävät titled
"Ullakkopalo" in the summer of 2010. The album has been prepared
carefully during the last two years. It contains music that is extremely
dense: the tracks consist of dozens of layers of sounds and instruments.
"Ullakkopalo" requires the listener to focus and preferably also have
good audio equipment played at a sufficient volume. Since such
conditions can rarely be found at peoples homes and the reproduction of
the music live is near impossible the idea of a listening event was
conceived. We want to revive and re-invent this way of spreading music.
It is also a tribute and a recovery attempt to the death sentenced
phenomenon, the album as a whole. In spite of this the project is not
intended as mere nostalgia: the music itself is radical, fresh and has
the smell of the present day.

INTRODUCTIONS
Before the album there are a few lectures on interesting and educational
topics. Presentations last approximately 20 minutes each. Writer,
composer and sound artist Petri Kuljuntausta speaks on the topic of
animal music, Lars Mattila who also plays on "Ullakkopalo" speaks of
hidden architecture in its various manifestations. In addition there is
a surprise performer. The introductions will be in Finnish.

If you wish to participate as a member of the press please contact us
and we will help with all practical things like accomodation and travel.

Contact info:
Jan Anderzén / Kemialliset Ystävät / 050 587 0270 / jan@kemiallisetystavat.com
Sami Sänpäkkilä / Fonal Records / 050 584 1486 / sami@fonal.com

http://www.kemiallisetystavat.com
http://www.myspace.com/valojuopot
http://www.fonal.com
http://www.bgalleria.net
http://www.ptarmigan.fi
http://www.teatteri-ilmio.com
http://www.tampereenylioppilasteatteri.net
http://www.musicalaudio.fi

Hi Fonal Friends!

Time for another friendly competition! This time we'd like you to reproduce a Fonal album cover

1.	The rules are simple: select a Fonal album cover you like and make your version of it. You can see all the covers here: http://www.fonal.com/shop/?typesel=99&letter=

2.	Choose your own weapons: paint, pen, pencil, camera, photoshop, fabric or just anything you can come up with. It’s up to you wheter your version should be realistic or a creative one.

3. Upload your reproduction here as an attachment before May 14th 2010 and tell us which cover you chose to reproduce.

We will select two winners who will receive a Fonal CD of their choice! Good luck!!!

Love, Sami / Fonal

PS. We will upload all the entries to our Facebook fanpage as well: http://www.facebook.com/fonalrecords
Yes, thank you! Worth to play any show for even one listener, no doubt about that. We had great time in Scotland and hope to come back soon!

N-M
Thank you very much for your comments. I agree about the audience, but it seems that there has been some listeners too...nice!

Now we all just have to wait the next, "even better" album to be born. Hope it doesn't take too many years this time.

Juho
Wonderful gig in Inverness (despite terrible audience). I was so impressed, I bought all your albums in one go. Truly excellent stuff, all of it - but you are getting even better album by album. Keep it up!
His appropriation of antique songs calls to mind the prospecting of Daniel Day-Lewis's oilman in There Will Be Blood: he performs the subterranean, hardscrabble toil of research, then plunges his drill down deep, coming back with black gold.” -The Independent

His most recent album ‘Spoils’ is widely regarded as his artistically most successful yet, and appeared in several recent end-of-year polls. “With an extraordinary vocabulary of deliberate archaisms and seductive, and beautifully artificial, metre, Roberts has found a new way to remake the traditions that are folk’s primary fuel”. -The Wire

“Roberts is a songwriter who clearly has a very firm working knowledge of more traditional strands of the genre he occupies (his lyrics and guitar playing are, as ever, of considerable merit) but there's a free-roaming, ramshackle rawness to the recordings and presentation here that imbues a sense of intimacy and unconditionedness to proceedings.” -boomkat.com

Roberts takes his earthen craft on the road for this tour in the guise of the Alasdair Roberts Band, a 4-piece comprised of himself, member sof his old band Appendix Out and members of Glasgow band Tatty Toes.

This will be the first ever UK tour by Kiila, a collective based in Turku, Finland. Kiila typify the exciting new wave of music coming out of Finland in recent years, typified by the output of the label Fonal.

Kiila released their 3rd album Tuota Tuota in June 2009 and, in the words of Dusted Magazine: “Kiila’s greatest coup is shoehorning genuine song craft into this mix without upsetting the balance. (For example) album opener, Viisi Hirvasta. For its first half it’s a hypnotizing instrumental built from plangent strings, stray percussion, and a recurring melody on the bass, until a half-chanted/half-sung passage emerges near its conclusion, making you wonder if it started life as a song, a poem or a jam. Tuota Tuota is full of moments like these, where you have to question how it is your listening, as all your usual hierarchies are upended and genres turned on their heads. That you at first don’t quite realize Kiila is doing this is remarkable; that they make it seem so natural is even more so.”

Though previous Kiila releases have featured tape collage, synths, turntables and more, its fair to say that Tuota Tuota comes across like their own skewed take on folk rock, albeit through psychedelic Finnish eyes. Kiila have been in existence for a decade or more now, and their various members are also active in other groundbreaking Finnish acts that have also achieved cult status in the UK and the US, including Kemialliset Ystavat, Islaja, Avarus and Shogun Kunitoki.

When this sextet take the stage, you may be taken aback by the driving rhythms, sublime vocal harmonies and casually virtuous multi-instrumentalism that follow. Often compared to like-minded US acts such as MV&EE and Espers, who have all found significant audiences in the UK and US, Killa are regarded by those who know them as at least as equally musically profound and influential but still to reap their much-deserved wider recognition.

This tour is produced by Newcastle-based promoters No-Fi, with the support of the Scottish Arts Council’s Tune Up programme, Finnsih organizations ESEK and LUSES, and AV10 Festival.

http://www.alasdairroberts.com/
http://www.kiila.com/
Hi,

I noticed on the fonal site a couple of months ago that Islaja had a show scheduled for February 20th at The Stone, in New York. Has this been cancelled?

Thank you,
Matt
Tv-resistori julkaisee ilmaisen digitaalis-sinkun "Voi ei, ei voi olla
totta" 27. tammikuuta.

terv.
